Dolled Up Nail Bar, Exeter

Transformation of Exeter’s newest nail bar.

The brief

To transform an unpromising former taxi rank office, in the heart of Exeter, into a jewel of a Nail Bar.

The work

Ashton House Design were invited to create a stand out interior, that would deliver function and appeal in equal measure. A sophisticated “take” on a glamourous vintage theme evolved, as artwork, wall finishes, furniture and accessories were finalised.

This was an exercise in making the most of tight spaces and optimising the appeal of the premises. Borrowed light was channelled into the lounge area, below ground floor, through the introduction of a glass floor, whilst a capacious cloakroom was only made possible by employing a neat, pocket door. This cosy lounge area, is ideally suited to a small party who fancy a joint visit. It is served by a neat collection of hexagonal stools, designed to tessellate, and a novel illuminated table at their centre. This hidden retreat is connected by a striking mural that fills one entire wall and sets the tone perfectly.

A glamourous, yet wholly practical, flooring was selected from a Salcombe based firm, as the backdrop to other finishes, where wall coverings were favoured over paint finishes. An uplifting fuchsia pink paper draws the eye of passers-by, and closer inspection reveals a richly textured paper that completes the scheme.

Against this canvas, furniture was designed and commissioned to embellish the interior. A majestic, throne like chair awaits those who select a pedicure, whilst a decorative French cabinet provides a glamourous focus, centre stage. Vintage prints, depicting nail adverts from yesteryear, have been artfully framed, and backlit, pink silk umbrellas overhead are, perhaps, the single most striking element in this cleverly layered interior. They are however, just one element of the lighting design that provides task and ambient lighting in perfect balance. There is no question that the relaxing ambiance, enhanced by a glass of pink fizz, adds to the nail bar experience, and Pauline is already attracting a fan base.

The result?

Both Ashton House Design, and their client, are delighting in the positive reaction to the opening of “Dolled Up”. Our imaginative design has even extended to the “Dolled Up” logo itself – the bold window signage and “must have” casino style “chips” are available as gift vouchers – unique and original!
