Exe Estuary Home Interior Design

Character injection for timber frame new build

The brief

The owner’s of this Exe Estuary home gave us one of our favourite interior design briefs. Here’s a blank slate. Fill it with richness, complexity and surprise to equal its stunning surroundings.

The work

There’s nothing not to love about the estuary setting for this newly constructed home, and plenty of inspiration arising from it. We’ve been involved from the outset with this project and continue to implement our plans five years on!

The timber frame construction needed some character imposed upon it. We helped with the selection of every exterior architectural finish – from slates to render, cladding to decking. Inside, the open-plan arrangement on the ground floor was united through the use of closely toned stone and timber – while all interior wall finishes and lighting were meticulously designed with a long-term plan in mind. As each area of the house takes shape, early attention to detail has proven invaluable.

The result?

‘Our involvement with Ashton House Design began in September 2010. We’d just started a new build project and decisions had to be made about general layout and electrics. With no experience in this field, the task was daunting especially as the builders wanted decisions made quickly on a daily basis. I contacted Simon from Ashton House Design as they are Devon-based. After our first meeting I was reassured that his help would be invaluable as he had recently completed his own new build project and was au fait with the whole building project rather than just coming to the project from an exclusively “interiors” angle.

As the project progressed the input from Simon and his team was invaluable. Electrical plans were drawn up not by the electricians but by Simon and were planned with the finished interiors in mind and consequently I have not had to pay for any alterations – changing plug socket positions, audio-visual layouts etc. The most valuable input from Ashton House Design was their knowledge of project management – they’d nudge me into pressing forwards with flooring decisions before I was asked by the builders. Their product knowledge, level of detail and organisation has been exemplary. We are now on the interiors phase of our project and Simon continues to be involved which is testament to his patience, sense of humour and immense attention to detail. My involvement with Ashton House Design made the very stressful process of house building into an exciting and rewarding experience and I wholeheartedly recommend them.’
