The Contemplative Home

Having recently refurbished our living space at home, we are only too aware of just how crucial a relaxing home is to our well-being and sense of calm. Returning home night after night to chaos and upheaval affects our ability to switch off and recharge for the next day. Even though we knew this was temporary pain for long term gain, the process really did affect me.

A strong desire for the calm sanctuary of home and the ability to truly relax got me thinking way beyond all of the usual everyday design considerations.

Our homes are quite naturally full of distractions – televisions, music playing, kids on games, dishwashers, phones pinging and much more. How then to escape this background noise, yet still feel connected to our homes?

Start with the basics, calming colour palettes, natural materials, textural layers and a warm atmosphere. This should be a space that invites you to stay awhile. For some this might be a dedicated sanctuary, somewhere to focus wholeheartedly on one’s wellness and self-care. Such a thoughtfully designed interior can serve as a refuge in which to meditate, relax, to find quiet where one can contemplate and even brainstorm. This is unlikely to be a gym but could perhaps complement a more active zone – think more meditative wellness and self-care alongside the keep fit!

This comfort zone could include squishy seating, a gorgeous rug, underfloor heating, ambient lighting, and a connection to the natural outside world if possible. Natural light is always a bonus, ideally capturing a beautiful aspect and harnessing nature – this can’t help but uplift your mood and offers a direct connection to nature.

Such a space doesn’t need to be a retiring, shy interior. Use a palette that uplifts you personally. A favourite floor tile might find a home here, a wall covering that you’ve been desperate to use or a special rug purchase might inspire – these can still energise and soothe if used in the right way. Avoid cluttering this interior, aspiring instead for zen like calm.
